Michelle Dean Kaminer was born of Russian descent in New York City and grew up in North Jersey. She received her bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts and Theater from Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 2001. She currently resides in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Artist’s Statement

There is an underlying veil of tranquility in everything, something translucent but ever-present connecting the world – man and natural. I strive to evoke this feeling that I see in the world, by capturing brief and shimmering moments with my photographs. Years of experimenting with digital media, has allowed me to manipulate images to convey my understanding and vision of the streets and people around me. Camera ready at all times, my photographs avoid a sense of purpose or determination; instead there is fluidity and truth in the naked moments that are captured. Light, windows, and rain become filters that transform ordinary subjects- cars, roads, buildings, lights, a person’s presence, into evanescent objects suspended in time. In my photographs I strive to transform objects and environments that surround us, to offer a glimpse of another reality, resulting in images that are simultaneously stunning and over-powering.
