5 Innovative Ways to Live with Your Art

posted on August 14, 2011 by Gina Hong

Fall is approaching! Autumn is the perfect time to be setting up a warm home, one that gives off the perfect vibe to welcome everyone who walks through the door. We just gave you a bunch of tips for dressing up your small space, but remember that a framed work of art can define a room and enliven any space, large or small. So here are 5 suggestions for rethinking how you live with art in the home

Don't forget negative space--work those corners!

Especially in apartments, corners often waste away unused and under-appreciated: don't let that happen to you--try out various looks for your corners. Use artwork to create a curated corner of several different pieces, or even create a little reading nook that's balanced with a bold framed print.

Be creative with placement, and don't forget about high-traffic areas

Remember that there is no rule that requires all frames to be hung at eye-level. Play around with highs and lows and remember that a single print, hung lower or higher, can center a room, or a collage of framed prints can create a beautiful creative statement. Don't forget that in addition to playing around with placement, you can also work with high-traffic areas to brighten widely used areas of the home, i.e. the bathroom, the kitchen counter, and narrow hallways.

Try multiple sizes of the same print

Different sizes of an abstract print can work together to energize and integrate a room, especially when framed in alternating directions--how gorgeous is this example! And how perfect that these prints are offered in so many sizes at affordable prices *nudge nudge*! We love how this example uses the bright colors of the prints to balance a neutral room. Try it yourself!

Do the rockaway, now lean back

Art doesn't always have to hang on walls! Remember that you can lean prints of any size on shelves, or even unused compartments of a bookcase. This not only makes for a relaxed chic home, but it also makes it easier to move your artwork around whenever you'd like; so keep in tune with your feng shui by relaxing your art collection.

Brighten up the bed, never fret about the headboard again!

If you're a home renter/semi-nomad living in a big city, that's no excuse to give up on home design, but we understand that a lot of folks end up using beds without headboards--don't fret: invest in a larger print or multiple small prints to hang above the bed instead of a headboard. Even if you have a headboard, you can extend the grandeur of your sleeping area with prints!

Jahn Hall by Mattias Heidrich would make a mighty headboard, and George Jefferson by Sonya Kozlova is a perfectly playful addition to a more vintage inspired room.
